Introduction to Competitive Events

All competitive events are individual. Choose to compete in the Strong Person or Powerlifting competition.  All events will run concurrently so you may only choose one.

This event is about raising money for Wellspring Calgary and all entries are welcome. There will be a Best Team Trophy that will be given to the club that achieves the most overall points. Points will be calculated by Ranking in each event.

1st place – 10 points
2nd place – 9 points
3rd place – 8 points
And so on…


Strong Person

Event 1: Overhead Medley

Event 2: Carry Medley

Event 3: Axel Deadlift

Event 4: Strong Hold

Each weight category will have a winner and runner-up recognized.

RAW Power Lifting

Squat: Max Weight
Depth will be judged by the crease of the hip passing below the top of the knee. Any downward movement while standing up is a no lift. Commands will be given to start the lift as “squat” once the athlete is stationary with the legs locked. Lockout of the knees and hips must be achieved and the judge will give a “rack” command. If the bar is returned to the rack before this command it is a no lift. Any steps throughout the lift will be a no lift.

Strict Curl: Max Weight
The Lift stats when the lifter is motionless and the bar is properly positioned with Head & Chin Up and arms extended fully down. The referees will signal “curl”. Once the curl command is given the lifter must bring the bar up to the fully curled position (bar near chin or throat with palms facing backward). The knees must remain locked and the shoulders and buttocks against the wall throughout the entire lift. The judge will them signal “Down”. The signal will not be given until the bar is held motionless and the lifter is in the apparent finished position.

Bench Press: Max Weight With his or her back resting on the bench, the lifter takes the loaded bar at arm’s length. Once the lifter has demonstrated full lockout to the judges (and after the lift off person has left the platform), the lifter lowers the bar to the chest. On the chest the bar must be hold motionless until the referee give the “press” signal. The lifter pushes the weight up until the arms are straight and the elbows locked. Then the referee will call “rack” and the lift is completed as the weight is returned to the rack.

Deadlift: Max Weight In the deadlift, the lifter grasps the loaded bar which is resting on the platform floor. The lifter pulls the weights off the floor and assumes a standing erect position. The knees must be locked and shoulders back with the weight held in the lifters’ grip. At the referees command the bar will be returned to the floor under the control of the lifter.

Military Press: Max Weight This lift starts from a standing position with the bar in the Squat hooks. The lifter unracks the bar and takes a step back, with the bar being held up by the hands no more than a bar width above the collarbones. Once the lifter is standing erect, with knees locked, they will be given the “Press” command. With no motion in the body, the lifter will press the weight overhead until the elbows are locked and the body is stationary. The lifter will then receive the “Down” command, and will proceed to lower the bar under control back to the starting position. The lifter will then be given the “Rack” command, and may return the bar to the hooks.
