Whether you are looking to lose weight, gain strength, or have more energy, it is important to set goals. This can be one of the most important steps in a fitness journey and will help you have something to strive for. If you know the outcome you desire, it is easier to plan how to get there.
A useful way of making goals more powerful is to set S.M.A.R.T. goals. This stands for: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time related.
Specific details will make your goals important and you’ll feel more compelled to achieve them.
Measurable goals allow you to track progress and identify when you have achieved them. It is important to periodically check this in order to stay on track and know when to celebrate your achievement.
Attainable can be thought to be an obvious step but you would be surprised how many people set their goals too high and therefore set themselves up for failure. Big goals can be important, but I would suggest that smaller goals leading up to the overall large goal are put into place.
Relevant means it is something that you really want and that will drive you in the right direction.
Time related sets a realistic deadline that will keep you moving forward. A lot of us are motivated by deadlines and your fitness goals are no different. There needs to be a start and an end point. If you always say, “I will start tomorrow,” and tomorrow never comes, it might be because you have not also picked a deadline.
Be brave enough to set goals and follow the S.M.A.R.T. principal. Make your goal known to others and they will become real. Find an accountability partner and report your progress to this person so you stay honest with yourself on how you are doing. You will be happy you did.
